In this chapter, the implications of extraposition for syntax–prosody interface are examined in a recursive theory of prosodic structure. It is shown that extraposition in German often improves the prosodic structure of a sentence.

• Extraposition does not, however, remove the finite clause from the LF-computation, MIT 25 Apr 2013 which is reintroduced into the computation by the operation SIMPL at Spellout. • Merge of an EXPL at [Spec, vP] is driven by the narrow syntactic requirement of a D-\N- feature at the edge of vP, and is fundamentally unrelated to the extraposition of the finite clause. However, their discourse functions apart, clefts and extraposition differ in their syntax. Unlike clefts, extraposition may involve predicates other than the copula be

Unlike clefts, extraposition may involve predicates other than the copula be, i.e., It helps to think that my mother will be there waiting for us and It surprises me how seriously she takes this stuff. Furthermore, extraposition IT-Extraposition involves (i) the use of "it" as a filler of the grammatical position with which a particular valence element would otherwise be associated, and (ii) a clausal or verbal expression later on in the sentence which expresses the meaning of that element. Peter W. Culicover Extraposition and the Michael S. Rochemont Complement Principle 1. Extraposition and Movement English sentences containing NPs with postnominal adjunct or argument clauses and PPs exhibit an alternation that has been of long-standing interest to generative syntac-ticians.

Mark R. Baltin revised version to appear in The Syntax Companion New York University First Draft Extraposition may be defined as a process by which an element is moved to the right of, or subsequent to, its canonical position. Examples of extraposition are given in (1-3):

Extraposition of complements, by contrast, is derived in a traditional manner, i.e. by movement of the complement.! The argument is based on two observations. First, the "extraposed constituent" in adjunct extraposition - in contrast to That's not extraposition, but postposing. Most extraposition constructions have the dummy subject "it" and a postverbal subordinate clause, e.g. "It is fortunate that you could come".

E Extraposing a constituent results in a discontinuity and in this regard, it is unlike shifting, which does not generate a discontinuity.

To force a choice between the symmetric and antisymmetric analyses of PP-extraposition, we explore the syntax of temporal only (as in John promised to leave on Monday, but he only T left on Tuesday). Extraposition of complements, by contrast, is derived in a traditional manner, i.e. by movement of the complement.! The argument is based on two observations. First, the "extraposed constituent" in adjunct extraposition - in contrast to complement extraposition - shows no sign that it has been moved (and every sign that it has not).

Most extraposition constructions have the dummy subject "it" and a postverbal subordinate clause, e.g.

Example. in (ii) the relative clause which I like is extracted from the subject NP and moved to the right. PPs can be extraposed as well: in (iv) the PP about the Sovjet Union is extraposed.
